Journalist and aviation safety expert Christine Negroni shared four essential tips for passengers to increase their chances of survival in a plane crash.

Christine Negroni, journalist and aviation safety expert, wrote for Slate magazine a series of precautionary measures that can improve a person’s chances of surviving an airplane accident.

Data from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) shows that 153 plane crashes occurred in 2025, 23 of which were fatal. The increase in accidents raises travelers’ concerns.

Negroni wrote that wearing leggings is not advisable, as in case of a fire onboard, the synthetic fabric can reach temperatures hot enough to melt a person’s skin.

“The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommended in 1999 that clothing made of cotton, wool, leather, and even denim is preferable to synthetic fabrics,” the expert stated.

She also advised that footwear used during the flight should be suitable for adverse situations, such as a floor filled with glass and aircraft debris.

Wearing a seatbelt is an essential measure to prevent injuries during turbulence.

The expert warned about the risk of fire in lithium-ion batteries and portable chargers.

“Carrying, dropping, or even wetting them can cause the batteries to heat up, release smoke, or catch fire,” Negroni warned.
